TXT’s Soobin Was Unanimously Chosen To Be The Group’s Leader Pre-Debut, And He Finally Disclosed Which Member He Gave His Vote To
TXT is one of the rare groups in K-Pop where most members do not have fixed positions. Only the title of “leader” was officially given to one person: Soobin.
Though it is now hard to imagine anyone else as the reliable guide of the group, it was not always certain it would end up this way. TXT has been vocal about the democratic process they followed pre-debut where every single member—Hueningkai, Taehyun, Beomgyu, and Yeonjun—as well as the HYBE staff who looked after them, took a vote for whom they wanted to be the group’s leader. Everyone picked Soobin.
Several years since then, the member in question talked about this topic from his point of view in a live broadcast.
He was asked by a fan, “Who did Soobin give his vote for leader to?” It dawned on him that MOAs did not know his side of the story. In fact, he was certain that the others in TXT were in the dark about his answer as well.
Wow! Today’s the first time this will be revealed. Even the members don’t know. I gave my leader vote to Yeonjun.
— Soobin
The reasoning behind his choice was simple: Yeonjun was a responsible hyung who already looked after them.
At that time, was it because he was the eldest? He had the vibe of ‘eldest’ in my eyes. He took the lead when we practiced synchronizing our dance moves.
— Soobin
In fact, Soobin had no doubts that Yeonjun would become the leader of the group.
At that time, I was thinking, ‘Who else [would be leader] if not Yeonjun!‘ It was so obvious to me that it was going to be him.
— Soobin
Like the humble person that MOAs know him to be, Soobin expressed his confusion at being given such an important role even years down the road.
At that time, all of the staff and all of the members voted for me to be leader…to be honest, I still don’t understand why until now. Back then I was a shy and introverted person.
— Soobin
He now knows that he was chosen because everyone knew that he would “wait for someone to get back on their feet when they fall down and go together with them rather than thoughtlessly pulling that person up.”
That’s TXT’s reliable leader, Soobin!
