Filipino K-Pop Idols Make History At The “2024 MAMA Awards”

It took 25 years to achieve this.

The MAMA Awards is one of Korea’s biggest music awards shows of the year. Since 1999, idols have graced the stage to accept awards for their achievements. This year, MAMA history was made by a 5th generation girl group.

On Day 2 of the 2024 MAMA Awards, held in Osaka, Japan, UNIS was one of several female artists to win the award for “Fans Choice (Female).” By winning this award, they also earned an unofficial title: the first K-Pop girl group with full Filipino members to win a MAMA award.

Although many K-Pop groups have non-Korean members, UNIS is the first one to have a Filipino line. Prior to her debut, Elisia made history as the first Filipina to rank number one on a Korean survival show.

Before joining UNIS, Gehlee was active in the pageant world. She earned titles, modeling experience, and represented more than one brand.

The final member in UNIS’s Filipino line is Hyeonju, who was born to a Korean father and a Filipino mother in South Korea. She was previously active in the industry as a member of GOOD DAY and Cignature (as Belle). Although Cignature was nominated for “Artist of the Year,” “Best New Female Artist,” and “Worldwide Icon of the Year” at MAMA in 2020, the group did not win these awards.

UNIS’s historic win is a win for the group’s hardworking members, but also for Filipinos everywhere. After 25 years, Filipino K-Pop idols have finally won a MAMA award! Other MAMA trailblazers include Sarah Geronimo, who received the “Best Asian Artist Award” in 2012, Filipino boy group SB19, and 2NE1‘s Sandara Park, who is not Filipino but grew up in the Philippines. Congrats again, UNIS!
