Controversial Counsel: Foreign Lawyer’s Viral Tips For Women In South Korea Sparks Debate

Do you agree?

Popular TikTok account K Explorer, known for his street interviews in Korea, recently shared a video asking a lawyer, “What advice would you give to someone that would like to move to Korea or abroad based on your personal experience?” She enthusiastically responded, “That’s a good question. I was waiting for this question!”

Algerian lawyer sou (@soumiatub on Instagram) warned foreign women that the law is not on their side and that there is no equality.

The law, it’s not with women in Korea, it’s always with men. It’s always with the Korean side, not the foreigner’s side… I’m a lawyer, that’s why I’m saying this because I know the law in Korea. So, the law is not with the women, it’s with the men. If you do a lot of mistakes, and he do one, you are not the same. You are the mistaken one. If he do a lot of mistakes, and you do one mistake, you are same. And that’s not fair for the women.

She continually emphasized the importance of being knowledgeable and thoughtful about the laws in Korea. She warned foreign women who might want to move to Korea and start a family. She can speak from personal experience, as she has a child with a Korean man.

It’s very muscular country, if I may say this. Be careful. Know the law in Korea before you marry to Korean… Know the law in Korea before you have a child in Korea because it’s so hard, so expensive, everything in Korea with money. You might be happy if you have work, stable work with your child and your husband, but always, always think about the law in Korea. That’s my advice.

The video garnered just 104K views and 278K views on TikTok and Instagram, respectively, but a netizen’s repost on X (formerly Twitter) went viral with 3.7M views at the time of writing.

She says it, too… Korean law is masculine… It’s for men….

Of course, with any viral post comes the divided comment section. Unfortunately, it was filled with xenophobia and misogyny, further reiterating sou’s point. Yet, such comments were often from foreigners themselves.

Others pointed out that these problems are not exclusive to South Korea. It’s a worldwide issue; everything she said can be applied to moving anywhere else.

On the other hand, Instagram and TikTok commenters were praise-worthy of sou. Many agreed with her.
