VMAs Reportedly Dropping “Best Group” Category, Which BTS Have Won For Past 2 Years
The MTV Video Music Awards Twitter account has responded to the claim.
The MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) will reportedly drop the “Best Group” category going forward, after awarding it to BTS twice in a row.
The report comes from a Billboard article discussing the first-round ballot for the 2021 VMAs.
The VMAs are apparently dropping the best group category, which they brought back in 2019 following a 12-year absence. BTS won the last two years.

BTS won the award in 2019 and 2020 following the category’s revival against artists such as 5 Seconds of Summer, Jonas Brothers, and The 1975.
The “Best K-Pop” category was introduced in 2019, and BTS took home the award for their collaboration with Halsey, “Boy with Luv.”
BTS didn’t attend the award show that year due to a very-deserved break for some rest and relaxation.
In 2020, they won the “Best Pop” category in addition to “Best K-Pop” and “Best Choreography” for “On” from Map of the Soul: 7.
This year, BTS are nominated for their single “Butter” in both the “Best Pop” and “Best K-Pop” categories. Both critics and fans expect to see success for them again this year, despite the category drop.
