On the night of August 6, BTS‘s Suga was found fallen over in Hannam-dong, having driven an electric scooter after drinking. According to media reports, breathalyzer results revealed his blood alcohol level to be well above the legal limit, leading the police to launch an investigation that has since concluded. After the case is forwarded to prosecutors, Suga may face criminal charges, according to the Korean press, given that his vehicle must obey the same laws as cars.
Many fans, especially those in South Korea, are highly disappointed by his actions. On August 13, 2024, wreaths were sent to HYBE in order to call for Suga’s withdrawal from the group.
Here are some of the messages on the wreaths:
- “Min Yoongi withdraw! Congrats on your downfall.”
- “Free BTS”
- “Withdraw Min Yoongi from the group. His downfall is imminent.”
- “Withdraw, Min Yoongi. Aren’t you sorry to your members?”
- “Min Yoongi, withdraw from the group as an apology to the members.”
Netizens expressed their support for those who had sent the wreaths, approving of those who asked Suga to take responsibility.
- “Fans are the ones suffering, really…”
- “The ARMYs with a brain are working so hard. I’m supporting you! If he had any conscience at all, he’d leave the group.”
- “There’s some photos I have on hand, but there are some chrysanthemum wreaths in the mix, so I don’t know if I can upload them.”
- “Hwaiting.”
- “The normal fans sure are suffering… Cheering for you!”
- “It’s better for them to do that rather than physically be there and get taken away. Anyway, hwaiting to the fans.”
- “They sent wreaths as individuals because they tried to stop truck protests by forcing people to pay to sign up [as members to hire trucks] LOL.”
Previously, the public had already been clamoring for his withdrawal. It has been reported, however, that Suga’s removal is not being considered at this time.
