Ahn Joong Geun is one of the most respected independence fighters and activists in Korea as he fought for freedom during the Japanese occupation. It turns out that Yi Chen’s great-great grandfather was Ahn Joong Geun’s cousin, Ahn Myung Geun. They were both in the independence movement. While Ahn Joong Geun was responsible for the assassination of Itō Hirobumi, the then-Japanese Resident-General, Ahn Myung Geun was arrested for being the ringleader of the plans to raise funds for the assassination of Governor-General Terauchi.

Ahn Myung Geun was later released and exiled to China’s Jilin province, where he put down roots. Eventually, Yi Chen was born as Ahn Joong Geun and Ahn Myung Geun’s descendant! He shared the tidbit during his introduction on PROJECT7.

Many grew interested in him after finding out about it.

I don’t watch the show, but I have to keep voting for him as a way to pay back Ahn Joong Geun. You have to do this at least, if you’re Korean.

Others quipped that not voting for him might be a betrayal to the country.

F*ck, if we don’t vote for him, we might become country betrayers.

Some wondered what would happen if he debuted with Japanese members.
