An anonymous YouTuber has sworn to reveal the identities of individuals involved in a gang rape case that occurred twenty years ago.
In 2004, a female middle school student identified as Choi was invited to visit Miryang by a high school student identified as Kim after dialing an incorrect number in 2003.
It was alleged that at least 44 high school students repeatedly sexually assaulted the 14-year-old over a year, and details alleged that her sister and cousin were also sexually assaulted.
At the time, 10 of the students who directly took part in the sexual assault were indicted and sentenced to probation, 20 were sent to juvenile detention centers, and 14 settled out of court.
The case was known for the lenient punishments and accusations that police failed to investigate thoroughly and mistreated the victims.
On Saturday, June 1, a YouTube account exposed the identities of three assailants, with another YouTuber exposing one additional person, with the first alleging that details were provided by other assailants.
The results of this exposure happened quickly, with one alleged rapist being suspended from his conglomerate job, another being fired from his car dealership position. A third alleged assailant’s former place of employment being demolished after it was exposed as being in an unauthorized building.
The Korea Sexual Violence Relief Center released a statement saying that Choi was not involved in these revelations and that she and her family called on the YouTuber to delete the videos.
