Wooyoung expressed his feelings in a recent interview where he was asked about the difficulties of being away from the limelight for the past five years.
“I heard about what unfortunately happened to Jonghyun. Maybe he had it harder than me and made that choice and it’s understandable. Many celebrities feel the same. I was like that too five years ago.”

Wooyoung found solace not only in his fellow group members, however, as he used various activities such as painting, scuba diving, reading, watching documentaries, and even studying music to help cope with his depression. He was also fortunate to have been able to lean on those who had more experience than him.
Wooyoung’s statement received mixed reactions, with some criticizing him for comparing his struggles with Jonghyun’s. While there were those who felt he had been disrespectful, others acknowledged his courage to voice his thoughts on the sensitive issue and felt that he was merely providing his own take on the very personal experience of depression.
