In 1992, author Gary Chapman published The Five Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate. This best-selling book outlines the five ways people like to express and receive love from their romantic partners.
According to Chapman, the five love languages are acts of service, gift-giving, physical touch, quality time, and words of affirmation. Everyone has their own “language” for giving love and receiving it. For example, someone who enjoys showing their partner love by folding laundry (acts of service), could prefer to receive words of affirmation (praise, encouragement, compliments, etc) as a form of love. Although the five love languages are usually applied to romantic relationships, they can also be applied to friendships.
