Why ENHYPEN’s Sunghoon Thinks It’s Time To “Say Goodbye” To Making Figure Skating Content
ENHYPEN‘s Sunghoon is the most famous K-Pop idol when it comes to figure skating. Even before appearing on the survival program that formed his group, I-LAND, he had a fanbase who followed his journey as a competitive skater.
He bagged several prizes throughout the years in both local and international competitions. As a prominent member of the senior skating scene, it was noteworthy how he hung up his skates to become a K-Pop idol.
Still, his involvement with the community was not completely cut off after his debut. One of his earliest solo stages was his rollerblading performance at the 2020 Mnet Asian Music Awards.
He noted, “I put wheels on the skates I used back when I was a figure skater and will be performing at MAMA with them. It feels really similar though it’s on [concrete].”
He also skated in front of his members in an episode of ENHYPEN’s YouTube reality series, EN-O’CLOCK.
Sunghoon was always the man of the hour when it came to figure skating commentary. Weverse Magazine even interviewed him alone to give beginner pointers on the sport in time for the Beijing Olympics.
What I think makes figure skating so appealing is that it’s a sport that feels like a combination of two different disciplines: art and athletics.

In his most recent interview with the same magazine, however, he confessed that he no longer wants to feature in figure skating related content. He determined that he had maxed out his involvement with the sport in relation to his entertainment life.
To be honest, what I really think these days is that I’ve done quite a lot related to figure skating since debut. So maybe the time has come to finally say goodbye.
— Sunghoon
He pointed out that he wants fans to see him in a new light. Two years following his debut, he hopes to be known more as a K-Pop idol than as a former competitive skater.
After all, I’m not a figure skater anymore—I’m Sunghoon from ENHYPEN.
— Sunghoon
Seunghoon added that his desire for growth means he will continue displaying his various talents and skills—just not in the skating sense.
And, as a member of ENHYPEN, I really want to show a new side of myself.
