EXO Xiumin’s Disturbing Legal Dispute With Malicious YouTuber “Sojang”
An infamous YouTuber is currently involved in multiple lawsuits, but this isn’t the first time she has faced a K-Pop idol in court.
The YouTuber, identified only by her surname, Park, operated the YouTube celebrity gossip channel Sojang. In May, she was criminally indicted for defaming seven Korean public figures between 2022 and 2024 and earning nearly ₩250 million KRW (about $183,000 USD) from these videos. BTS’s V and Jungkook, IVE‘s Jang Wonyoung, and Kang Daniel are just some of the idols who are suing (or already have sued) Park.
These lawsuits have made headlines this year, but some people might not be aware that Park’s malicious online behavior extends back to the 2010s, if not further.
Park was reportedly taken to court by EXO‘s Xiumin back when she went by the username Gasahara on DC Inside Gallery, a Korean forum founded in 1999.
Although the details surrounding the case are not well-known, according to Gasahara’s DC Inside Gallery post titled “My Record: Sued By EXO’s Xiumin,” she was found not guilty. Her comment below the photograph of a legal document and a piece of receipt paper with “GASAHARA” written on it reads: “Nope. Not guilty. I just said I wanted to rape him.”
Historically, Korean entertainment agencies have struggled to hold netizens like Park accountable, partly because it is difficult to uncover their identities. In the case of Jang Wonyoung vs Sojang, however, the idol’s agency used a legal loophole to obtain the information needed to sue Sojang. Jang Wonyoung won the lawsuit, setting a precedent that might help other idols win lawsuits against Park in the near future.
