Former BTS Sasaeng Fan Reveals Why Some People Decide To Become A Sasaeng
One of the worst things about being a K-Pop idol is dealing with sasaeng fans. These are “fans” who choose to invade the privacy of idols by doing things like stalking them. On Quora, a user by the name of Kasami Yamamoto, who is a former BTS sasaeng fan, shared some of her experiences of being a sasaeng fan and revealed some reasons why people become one.
Kasami Yamamoto shared that not all sasaeng fans act crazy because they were born that way and that there are multiple reasons why someone can become a sasaeng fan.
(Speaking from experience)
People can become sasaengs for different reasons. Contrary to popular belief, some sasaengs weren’t an evil human being at first. Not all sasaengs are just “born crazy.”

She shared that a lot of times, sasaeng fans choose to act crazy since they’ve fallen in love with an idol and want to try and get with them.
A lot of the time, it’s because the person has fallen in love with the idol but knows they’ll never have a chance, so they at least try.

However, this isn’t always the case, as some sasaeng fans choose to act “crazy” since they want to hurt an idol they don’t like.
Some other times, it’s to purposely hurt idols they do not like.

Sasaeng fans may choose to become one since they simply want to get the attention of their favorite idols.
Or it could be because they just want attention from their idols they admire so much.

For Kasami Yamamoto personally, she became a sasaeng fan for several reasons. One was that she “wanted” the BTS members badly. While she now recognizes that it was wrong to have that kind of mindset, she didn’t think that way in the past.
In my case, it was a mix of a few different reasons. 1 was that I really wanted them, badly. I didn’t understand the concept of not getting what I wanted, nor did I care that many millions of people feel the same way as I do.
“Wanting” your idol does not justify harassing them and invading their personal space. I did not understand that. I just tried to force myself on them because I didn’t think I could live without them.

Another reason was that she wanted to have a relationship with the members, especially Jungkook. Kasami Yamamoto felt that she and Jungkook were “destined” for each other.
I also wanted to have some type of relationship with them so they’d know I exist (especially Jungkook). I felt like Jungkook was my other half, that we were destined for each other, and that he was mine for the taking.
— Kasami Yamamoto
She also shared that a lot of sasaeng fans don’t understand that they’re not entitled to their idols. Not only that, but she also stated that some sasaeng fans get consumed by their love of their favorite idols.
No one is entitled to their idol in any way, but many sasaengs don’t understand that. It’s incredibly hard to stop thinking this way and changed mentalities. I know that a lot of sasaengs don’t like being in this situation, but they can’t help it much because of how much their love for their idols has consumed them.
— Kasami Yamamoto
Kasami Yamamoto concluded by stating that many factors go into becoming a sasaeng fan, and people can become one for different reasons.
But anyway, sasaengs could be sasaengs for many different reasons. It could be a simple reason, or it could be a complex, deeply rooted reason. It could be one reason, or it could be five. All in all, it depends on the sasaeng themselves why they do what they do.
