Jealous Girlfriend’s Revenge “Prank” Backfires: She Ends Up In Custody

She made the wrong drunk call.

In a case of jealousy gone wrong, a woman in Shanghai got herself into hot water after trying to get back at her boyfriend with a prank call to the police. The woman, known as Yue, was fed up because her boyfriend, Song, wasn’t answering her calls.

In a misguided effort to retaliate, Yue resorted to making a false report to the police, accusing Song of visiting a prostitute at a foot massage parlor. This impulsive decision was fueled by her discovery, through location services, that Song was near the said parlor, while he was actually dining with colleagues at a nearby restaurant.

The seriousness of Yue’s actions became apparent when the police, acting on her ‘tip-off,’ found the parlor closed and subsequently contacted Song for clarification. The situation escalated when Yue, under the influence of alcohol and gripped by unjustified suspicions, confessed to fabricating the report in a moment of anger and agitation.

Yue’s detainment by the Shanghai police for disrupting public order and fabricating facts reflects the severity with which law enforcement agencies treat such misconduct. The duration of her custody remains unclear, but the incident has undoubtedly served as a cautionary tale about the repercussions of misusing emergency services for personal vendettas.

People on social media in China had a field day with this story. Comments on Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, ranged from advice for Song to dump his “control freak” girlfriend to jokes about him now having a few days of freedom. The consensus was pretty clear: if you don’t trust your partner, don’t waste police time trying to get even.

This incident is not isolated in China, where there have been other instances of false reporting. A notable case involved three young boys in Guangxi Zhuang, who, in a dare, falsely reported a drowning incident. This prank resulted in a substantial two-hour search involving 40 officers and firefighters. Although the boys were released with a reprimand due to their age, the case further emphasizes the ongoing issue of false alarms and their drain on emergency services.

As the public reaction indicates, such acts not only strain personal relationships but also divert crucial resources from genuine emergencies, affecting the broader community.
