Katy Perry’s New “Feminist” Music Video Receives Backlash In South Korea

The music video has been deemed controversial for a number of reasons.

Recently, American pop star Katy Perry released a new song, “Woman’s World,” which has created quite a buzz on social media, and South Korea is no exception.

The song, a supposed “feminist” anthem, claims to celebrate women’s power. Yet, the track bombed with mainstream audiences and critics alike, as many felt its concept was completely outdated and didn’t align with modern-day feminism. From hypersexualization of her body to presenting a male-centric take on womanhood, Perry’s song ticked off all the wrong boxes, according to many. With the addition of the fact that the song was produced by the infamous producer Dr. Luke, who stands accused of sexually assaulting another American singer, Kesha, netizens are thoroughly unconvinced of the “feminist” tag of “Woman’s World.”

A post criticizing the music video has also gone viral on the popular Korean online community, Theqoo. The OP (original poster) highlighted multiple risqué scenes in their post. At the time of writing, it has garnered over 53,000 views and over 300 comments.

  • “What’s with the gay part in the middle?… And blowing air into the body is too reminiscent of a sex doll.”
  • “Oops.”
  • “It feels like she just exploited feminism…:
  • “It feels like the feminism from the 1920s when there wasn’t any freedom to wear whatever clothes you wanted, so you took them off…?? You can’t call that feminism now. Just looking at the images, it seems anti-feminist.”
  • “…??”
  • “Where exactly is the Feminism…? Is that person living 50 years in the past?”
