A Local Korean Restaurant’s Industrial, Minimalist Interior Gets Divided Opinions For Being “Too Hipster”
On the outside, it looks like your typical, random building. The unassuming sign and lack of any indication that it is a restaurant may put you off.
When you enter Jeil, you’ll be similarly perplexed. A lone dish? Pot? Stool? Well, some artefact or another will greet you amidst the bare space.
Located in Seongsu-dong, known for hipster cafes and restaurants, Jeil perhaps takes the cake. Set up with a one table concept, all the guests have to sit together. There is a limited number of seats. The rest of the space is littered with random objects such as a crate, a mirror or speakers.
A small archway leads to the toilet.
The restaurant is known for one dish only – roasted black pig. However, if you book in advance, you can enjoy the restuarant’s Jeil dish line, singular menus for rice, noodles, pancakes, or a mystery dish.
The menu is tattered and hard to decipher. It is said to be handstamped by the boss.
He wanted the interior to resemble an art exhibition.
Steel counters hide the kitchen and separate the serving area from the dining area.
The cherry on top? The toilets. While an industrial concept was the goal, many netizens have simply described it as derelict…
…with a broken sink to complete the look. Yes, that’s on purpose.
While guests have no complaints about the food, some online reviews have stated that the one table concept packs customers together without private room. The overall concept also is divisive, with some choosing to go out of curiosity and others avoiding the place entirely.
What do you think? Hit, or miss?
