The K-Pop Group That Inspired (G)I-DLE’s Soyeon To Become An Idol

“It hit me. That’s when I knew what I needed to [do].”

(G)I-DLE‘s Soyeon was the most recent member of the group to make an appearance on soloist Lee Mujin‘s popular musical talk show, Leemujin Service, following appearances by Minnie, Miyeon, and Yuqi in 2022 and 2023.

During her time on the show, she opened up about the group’s recently released album 2, her role as an executive producer for (G)I-DLE and the general producer for their album, and why she chose to become an idol after initially heading down a different path.

Since even before her debut, Soyeon has earned attention for her talents as a singer, dancer, rapper, songwriter, and producer.

Soyeon first garnered public attention through participating in reality programs Produce 101 and Unpretty Rapstar in 2016 as a CUBE Entertainment trainee and quickly signed an exclusive contract as an artist with the company that same year.

But before dreaming of being an idol, Soyeon shared that she was contemplating a future as a ballet dancer. She had been in ballet since she was younger and shared that she even won competitions, prompting her mom to encourage her to work toward entering a performing arts high school.

Instead, Soyeon revealed that she came across the music of second-generation K-Pop group BIGBANG when she was in the third grade and knew that she wanted to become a K-Pop idol instead.

Until that point, she had mostly listened to the music she would dance to for ballet, but through listening to BIGBANG, she began to explore hip-hop and rap, as well as the songs of other K-Pop idols.

Lee Mujin acknowledged how impactful BIGBANG’s music has been to himself and noted how they must have also played a “pivotal role” in inspiring Soyeon to pursue becoming a musical artist instead of pursuing ballet.

Not only is Soyeon now a K-Pop idol and leader of her self-producing group, but she is also celebrated for her musical and creative accomplishments both on and off-stage.
