Labubu Toy Craze Results In A 100 Thousand Dollar Lawsuit

The toys have been everywhere online.

Recently, a toy from the brand Pop Mart has become all the rage. Known as Labubu, the elf character plush toy was originally introduced in 2015 but has seen a massive rise in popularity due partly to TikTok and a shoutout from BLACKPINK‘s Lisa, who loves the toys.

These days, restockings of toys quickly go out of stock, showing massive demand for them.

This massive popularity has unfortunately led a woman to face a huge legal issue.

In early December, a restaurant in Malaysia held a drawing to celebrate its business, offering a Labubu as a prize for the lucky winner.

The winner, a young woman, claimed that the Labubu was fake. While there is a large issue with counterfeit toys, the restaurant claimed that the prize winner did not respond to requests for proof and instead continued posting online that the toy was fake, even including the name of the shop that the toy came from.

Eventually, the toy shop Pop Mart Labubu Malaysia, which provided the item to the restaurant, stepped in to address the situation in a now-deleted letter to the woman from the shop’s legal representation that claimed defamation.

The letter detailed several terms, including taking the posts down, publicly apologizing, and compensating the store 500,000 RM (around 110K USD).

With posts from both the woman and Pop Mart Labubu Malaysia being deleted, only time will tell if the massive  damages will be awarded in court.
