Where Is She Now? The Idol Who Was Assaulted By Men Allegedly Sent By Her Group Members

On December 8, 2018, Japanese idol, Yamaguchi Maho, then a member of the girl group NGT48, was assaulted by two male “fans” who had been lying in wait for her. After entering her apartment, the men–both 25-year-old college students–grabbed her face and tried to pin her to the ground.

During a livestream, Maho shared frightening details of the attack, telling the world that the second man seemed to have come from another apartment. That apartment belonged to one of her group mates. The sound of an elevator distracted her attackers, giving Maho the chance to escape.
After her livestream was cut short, Maho continued to share her story via tweets. In them, she claimed that other NGT48 members had leaked her personal information to her assailants, including her address and schedule so that they would know when she would be returning home.
The two assailants were arrested but released from custody 20 days later without prosecution. Both denied that they had attacked Maho, telling police they had just wanted to talk to her. A third man, an accomplice, was later identified by NGT48’s management. During a concert in January 2019, Maho apologized for causing trouble by speaking out. Her apology was met with outrage from fans who demanded the resignation of NGT48 director Etsuro Imamura and justice for Maho.
Maho left NGT48 following the incident, and on April 30, 2019, management filed a civil lawsuit against the two men who had attacked Maho. This resulted in an out-of-court settlement on April 9, 2020, wherein the men agreed to pay ¥2.4 million (approximately $15,624 USD) within a five-year period.
Where is Yamaguchi Maho now? Six years later, Maho is continuing her career as a soloist, model, and actress. She has appeared in a few Japanese series since 2020, including There Is A Reason Why You Cannot Get Married in 2021.
