For Olympians representing their countries, competing among the best in the world is a huge source of pride. For many of those who can make it to the podium with a medal, the honors go beyond just that and include cash prizes paid out by the country they are representing

Here are some of the highest amounts paid out to medalists by their countries.

5. Malaysia

Malaysia has won its share of medals since it began competing in 1956 but has yet to win a gold medal. As a result, the prize for a gold medal is quite substantial at 995,328 MYR (around 221,000 USD). Silver and bronze medalists receive 299,520 and 101,376 MYR (around 66,600 and 22,500 USD) respectively.

It was announced that the medalists for this years games so far will also receive SUVs.

4. Republic of Kazakhstan

The Republic of Kazakstan has won medals of all designations since its first competition as an independent nation in 1994. This has not affected the amounts allegedly given to gold medalists at 250,000 USD, with those receiving silver and bronze earning significantly more than some countries’ gold medalists (150,000 and 75,000 USD, respectively).

3. Indonesia

As of writing, Indonesia has won 38 medals in its Olympic history. It is reported that this year, athletes will receive $300,000 for a gold medal, $150,000 for a silver medal, and $60,000 for a bronze medal, and if continuing from previous Olympics, will receive a lifetime stipend.

2. Singapore

Singapore has won only one gold medal in its history and is attempting to encourage another gold finish with its massive award amounts. A gold medal brings in a whopping 1 million SGD (around 753,000 USD) while silver and bronze bring in 500,000SGD and 250,000 SGD (around 376,000 USD and 188,000 USD) respectively.

1. Hong Kong China

In its time competing as an special administrative region, Hong Kong has won 13 medals in total. Hoping to add to its 4 gold medals, Hong Kong offers the highest known amount for gold medalists at 6 million HKD (around $769,000 USD), with silver and bronze medalists earning 3 million HKD and 1.5 million HKD (384,000 USD and 192,000 USD), respectively.

It is worth noting that these are just the amounts offered by governing agencies, and as seen by Carlos Yulo’s Olympic wins, awards from private and local organizations could push these prizes even higher.
