But along with the expectation that K-Pop idols will work hard to improve their musical skills, the entertainment industry often requires idols to be able to showcase their other strengths on variety shows. While idols promote new music, they often go on various established variety shows and YouTube channels to promote their music, showcase their personality, and entertain viewers.
One recently successful variety show, Lee Young Ji‘s My Alcohol Diary (also known as No Prepare), was especially amusing to viewers. Lee Young Ji’s humorous honesty helped her guests relax and open up about everything, from their own funny stories to their sincere struggles.
The show was such a success that Lee Young Ji made a sizeable donation to five different charities.
In a compilation of scenes not included in the original episodes, Lee Young Ji and SHINee‘s Key talk about one of the unexpected difficulties idols have when preparing for variety shows. Although Lee Young Ji hosts My Alcohol Diary, Key is also an incredibly well-known variety show personality who hosts shows like Amazing Saturday.
Given their experience with variety shows, both Lee Young Ji and Key agree that they must have anecdotes prepared to be on a program successfully.
Lee Young Ji: A person has to be full of anecdotes…
Key: I am 31 years old now. I can tell stories like a mindmap.
And Lee Young Ji even admits that if she is in the middle of “an unexpected incident or an accident,” her focus is actually on how she’ll share the experience on a variety show.
Lee Young Ji: I’m sure you agree with me. Whenever I face an unexpected incident or an accident, I try to think of how to tell this story in a show.
Which Key immediately agrees with.
Key also emphasizes that the difficulty is finding the most entertaining way to tell the story.
Key: And you have to tell that story in a funny way. I’m similar to you.
It must be difficult for idols to always be trying to prepare what they will say to keep fans entertained, but both Key and Lee Young Ji do an incredible job of it.
