SISTAR’s Warning To Young Female Stars Resurfaces Amid Concerns About Male Idols
The release of BBC World Service’s documentary about the Burning Sun scandal revealed many more details about the case and opened up many more questions.
When the case broke in 2019, many were shocked by the involvement of male celebrities, including ex-BIGBANG‘s Seungri, ex-FT Island Choi Jonghoon, and Jung Joonyoung.
The documentary has resurfaced many things, including Seungri’s episode of I Live Alone, bringing up how the idol acted differently than his crimes would have implied.

Along with this, many have discussed prostitution and trafficking in Korea as associated with Burning Sun. One netizens recalled portion of another documentary, Prostitution In Korea, where men discussed the frequency of paying for sex.
According to a survey by the Korean Institute of Criminology, 1 in 5 Korean men in their twenties admitted to paying for sex at least 4 times a month. While sex work is legitimate work, many women and girls end up participating unwillingly in places where it is criminalized.
And though not all men will participate, one user used these clips to express concerns over male idols, especially considering that is who was involved with Burning Sun’s illegal sex video scandal.

This has caused the words of advice SISTAR offered to ex-I.O.I’s Kim So Hye about older male idols to resurface.
In 2016, SISTAR appeared on a program with Kim So Hye, offering the young idol advice on the thing to be careful most of all.
Men. Be careful of men. When you’re a rookie, male seniors won’t leave you alone, but not all male seniors are nice people. Become a hermit. Just stay at home and don’t meet up with guys.
— SISTAR
This advice has been brought up on many occasions the exact scenario described took place. As it has recently resurfaced, many netizens have discussed how the advice still rings true almost eight years later.
to remember how many minors are debuting in kpop nowadays & how many female idols can be fooled by male idols/celebrities that will seem nice& approachable is saddening;For exemple the male idols in this scandal were so friendly &seemed nice back then;
Sistar warning say it all😔 https://t.co/HENIwTyocE pic.twitter.com/ljqKDqczdm— RiMi (@RiMiKPOP) May 19, 2024
The debut of minors is a bit disheartening. Even though we support them, Not everyone sees them just as typical idols. It's a reality check that someone could be a predator, given that the safety of the Korean entertainment scene may not be as reliable as we assume. https://t.co/97MK74SUfe
