Lee Sung Kyung has been open about her past and her unexpected path to becoming a celebrity after her family fell on hard times when she was four.

As she prepared to enter a music school for college, her parents passed an ad searching for supermodels and suggested she apply.

She eventually became a supermodel, teaching herself how to walk on the runway through YouTube videos before undergoing formal training. As she began to develop an interest in possibly pursuing musicals, she was contacted about an opportunity to appear in the hit K-Drama, It’s Okay, That’s Love.

The director explained that he wanted a new face, someone without acting experience for the role of the character Oh So Nyeo.

Despite her lack of acting experience, she revealed that the It’s Okay, That’s Love creators requested that Lee Sung Kyung’s company, YG Entertainment, not give her any acting training for the role.

When she asked the show’s writer about the decision, she revealed that there is “no such thing as a tone for high schoolers or delinquents,” and since Oh So Nyeo was a “delinquent” character, the less polished and more authentic the performance, the better.

The experience of acting without formal training was beneficial to her, and she revealed it taught her the meaning of acting.
