We Got Married was super popular during its almost ten-year run. (The series aired from 2008-2017.) There were a lot of memorable moments and couplings, including the fan-favorite coupling of MAMAMOO‘s Solar and Eric Nam.
It almost goes without saying that a show that ran for a long as We Got Married did would encounter controversy. We’ve compiled a list of 5 of the worst controversies in the history of the show, and while the list isn’t comprehensive as the show was on the air for almost a decade, we did our best to highlight some of the most shocking scandals that rocked the program.
1. Lee Tae Im Attacking Yewon During Filming
Actress Lee Tae Im verbally attacked colleague Yewon during the filming of Tutoring Across Generations as the former was upset that the latter had the nerve to speak to her informally. Because of the incident, netizens demanded Yewon leave “We Got Married” and the producers allow Super Junior-M‘s Henry to get remarried.
2. SHINee’s Taemin And Apink’s Naeun Accused Of Scripted Scenes
SHINee‘s Taemin and Apink‘s Naeun were “married” on the show and viewers loved them. Fans were especially fond of the sweet way Taemin treated Naeun, unfortunately, as fond as viewers were of the couple, their time on the show wasn’t without controversy. In a particular scene, viewers believed they heard a staff member speaking in the background telling the pair to stay on script.
In the end, it was believed that it was Taemin’s sasaeng fans who spread the rumor in an effort to hurt him.
3. Jung Hyungdon Secretly Dating During Filming
Girls’ Generation‘s Taeyeon and Jung Hyungdon were one of the first couples on We Got Married, lovingly known as the “pudding jelly couple”. Unfortunately, in the middle of filming it came to light that Jung Hyungdon was dating Han Yura, whom he is now married to. Because of the scandal focused on Hyungdon’s relationship, netizens demanded that the pair be removed from the show.
Despite the controversy, Taeyeon and Jung Hyungdon were able to maintain a friendly, professional relationship even after their time on the program ended.
4. Hong Jonghyun’s Dating Rumor Scandal
Yura and Jonghyun were another popular We Got Married couple, in particular, due to their natural chemistry, however, a rumor soon emerged that Jonghyun was dating After School‘s Nana. Despite both Nana and Jonghyun’s agencies denying the dating rumors, Yura and Jonghyun eventually left the show due to “scheduling conflicts”.
5. Rumors Of The Show’s Cancelation
Even the show itself wasn’t free from scandal or controversy. In 2017, there were reports that the show would be canceled—which it eventually was—but up until any decision was made, MBC Entertainment had to release a statement denying cancelation rumors.
